Avalanche in Chamonix Kills Nine Climbers

An avalanche in Chamonix has claimed the lives of at least nine climbers, the deadliest accident there in years.  The avalanche occurred below Mt. Maudit, just hours from the Cosmiques climbing hut at the base of Mont Blanc du Tacul, where my friend Lucas and I overnighted on a tour this April.  It is frightening to imagine so many of your hut mates perishing after you might have sipped wine with them the night before and witnessed their pre-dawn departure, as we had done when we were there.  Much worse if they happened to be your friends or family members.  Very sad.  News stories below:
